Esta (Syncerus caffer caffer) é uma das 4 subespécies reconhecidas de Búfalo-africano e a de maiores dimensões. Os machos adultos são maiores e mais corpulentos do que as fêmeas. Ambos possuem cornos largos curvados para cima. No macho são expandidos, tocando-se no meio da fronte.
Espécie ruminante, alimenta-se de plantas herbáceas nas horas mais frescas do dia. Ingere água diariamente. Vive em manadas, com hierarquia bem definida em ambos os sexos. Em épocas de abundância alimentar, podem juntar-se até milhares destes animais. Realiza movimentações regulares dentro de uma mesma área extensa.
Os machos dominantes disputam o acesso reprodutivo às fêmeas através de combates, onde há uma corrida frente a frente, acompanhada de vocalizações e embate cabeça com cabeça, em que a força do impacto é amortecida pela “câmara” de junção dos cornos. A cria é defendida arduamente pela progenitora.
Distribuição e Habitat: África - Savanas, planícies abertas e arborizadas, sempre perto de água.


This (Syncerus caffer caffer) is one of the four recognized subspecies of African buffalo and the largest. Adult males are larger and heavier than females. Both have wide horns curved upwards. In the male they are expanded, touching in the middle of the forehead.
Ruminant species, it feeds on herbaceous plants in the coolest hours of the day. Needs water daily. It lives in herds, with a well defined hierarchy in both sexes. In times of food abundance, up to thousands of these animals can be added to the herd. Performs regular drives within the same extended area.
Dominant males gain reproductive access to females through fighting, where there is a head-to-head race, accompanied by head-to-head vocalizations and clashing, where the force of impact is cushioned by the horn's "chamber". The baby is strongly defended by the mother.
Distribution and Habitat: Africa - Savannas, open and forested plains, always near water.
